What Is Facial And Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Looking for a natural and holistic approach to enhance your skin? Facial rejuvenation and cosmetic acupuncture combine local and distal acupuncture points to help you achieve healthier-looking skin from within.

The goal is to encourage Qi and blood flow to the face to help improve the overall complexion and to reduce the look of fine lines, wrinkles and scars naturally and without injectables.

For women in Toronto looking for a natural, needle-based alternative to Botox or fillers, cosmetic acupuncture offers visible results without synthetic ingredients or downtime.

How Does Facial Acupuncture Work?

By stimulating specific acupoints on the face and body, cosmetic acupuncture encourages increased blood flow, collagen production, and cell renewal. This natural process helps:

  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles: As collagen production increases, skin becomes firmer and plumper, minimizing the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Improve skin tone and elasticity: Enhanced blood flow delivers vital nutrients to the skin, promoting a healthy glow and a more youthful appearance.
  • Minimize puffiness and dark circles: Acupuncture can help stimulate lymphatic drainage, reducing fluid retention and brightening the under-eye area.
  • Promote overall facial rejuvenation: By addressing imbalances and promoting overall well-being, cosmetic acupuncture can contribute to a healthier, more radiant complexion

What Is Gua Sha Stone Massage And Cupping?

Gua sha facial massage and cupping are traditional techniques that complement cosmetic acupuncture, enhancing results and deepening relaxation. At Soma & Soul in Toronto Beaches, these treatments are often incorporated into your session for a truly restorative experience.

Gua Sha is administered through unidirectional stroking with a polished stone tool applied to the face and neck.

Cupping is a technique using soft silicone cups to create gentle suction. Combined with a facial serum, the cups are slid over the contours of the face.

We typically use rosehip oil, but you are welcome to bring your own oil if you prefer.

What To Expect In Your Facial Acupuncture Session

Each session is about 60 – 75 minutes in length. It begins with an in-depth review of your health to help create an individualized plan, followed by a full treatment.

A session may include a gua sha stone massage and/or cupping, in addition to the insertion of needles on specific body acupuncture points, and superfine acupuncture needles on the face.

Once the needles are set, you will be left to enjoy pure relaxation. Your acupuncturist will check in on you periodically and return at the end to remove all needles and conclude the treatment.

Our Toronto Beaches acupuncturists create a calm, nurturing space where you can fully relax and let the treatment unfold.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Cosmetic Acupuncture

Is facial acupuncture painful?

Most people report that cosmetic acupuncture is a relatively painless experience. Of course, everyone’s pain threshold is different.

The needles used in cosmetic acupuncture are much thinner than those used in traditional acupuncture and are inserted shallowly into the skin.

Cosmetic acupuncture has some potential side effects, but they are rare and tend to be mild. Some of these may include bruising, local inflammation and temporary exacerbation of existing conditions.

We recommend 1-2 sessions per week for 5 – 6 weeks (a total of 10 – 12 sessions), then once a month for maintenance for optimal benefits. However, this may vary depending on your individual goals and response.

Facial acupuncture is not right for everyone. This treatment is contraindicated for people who are:

  • Pregnant
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Had recent facial surgery or treatment.

If you have had Botox or fillers you need to wait 8 weeks before receiving cosmetic acupuncture.

In order to assess if you are a candidate for facial acupuncture, your registered acupuncturist and/or licensed naturopathic doctor will take a thorough case history and perform any relevant assessments.

If you’re unsure whether cosmetic acupuncture is right for you, particularly if you’ve had recent injectables or facial procedures, our registered acupuncturists and naturopathic doctors in Toronto Beaches are happy to assess your individual situation.
