What is a PAP exam?

A PAP exam, or Pap smear, is a screening test designed to detect abnormal cells in the cervix that could indicate cervical cancer or pre-cancerous conditions. During the exam, a healthcare provider gently collects cells from the cervix using a small brush or spatula. The sample is then sent to a lab for analysis. Regular PAP exams can help identify issues early, improving treatment outcomes.

Why get a PAP exam with a ND?

Getting a PAP exam with a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) offers a supportive and patient-focused approach to your reproductive health. NDs prioritize individualized care, considering your full symptom presentation and health history. We strive to create an environment that is calm, comfortable and educational where you feel safe and aren’t rushed. This personalized approach can make the experience of a gynaecological exam both more comfortable and more comprehensive.

Who should get a PAP?

The general recommendation is that individuals with a cervix who have been sexually active begin getting PAP exams at age 21. Those who have not been sexually active by age 21 should wait until they have been sexually active.

A Pap test should be performed every three years until age 65. Those over 65, or who have had a hysterectomy for non-cancerous reasons, may no longer need to be screened. However, it’s essential to discuss your personal risk factors and screening schedule with your healthcare provider.

How do I prepare for my gynaecological PAP exam?

Upon booking, we will send you an intake and consent form to fill out prior to your scheduled examination. You will also be provided with a guide that will review requirements for the exam as well as general information about the exam.

What to expect during the appointment?

The gynaecological pap exam appointment length is 45min. During your appointment, you will meet with the ND to discuss your reproductive health history, the steps of the exam and any concerns or questions.

The gynaecological exam itself has three parts:

  • A visual examination of external structures
  • A speculum exam to assess the health of the vaginal canal and the cervix. The PAP sample will be collected at this time. We also offer an additional service to assess for bacterial vaginosis, yeast or trichomonas if indicated for your case. This will be discussed in visit, prior to the exam.
  • A manual internal exam to assess the health of your ovaries and uterus.

You will be encouraged to ask any questions you may have throughout the exam to ensure you’re comfortable.

What happens after the exam?

After the exam, your ND will explain the next steps. The collected sample will be sent to a lab for analysis, and results typically take about one to two weeks. Regardless of the nature of your results, your ND will follow up with you for a 15min call to discuss the results and any necessary actions based on your findings including next steps and recommended schedule for testing.
